RED LETTERS #2
The Rich Fool
During Jesus’ earthly ministry, one of the primary ways He would instruct His disciples was through parables. People would gather from far and wide in order to listen to what Jesus said about the kingdom of God, and the most common way He would explain the kingdom was in parables. But what does God want us to learn from these parables? In this series, I will examine several parables of Jesus, exploring the rich truths they reveal about who Jesus is and what He came to achieve through His life, death, and resurrection
Luke 12:13 (NIV) Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”
Luke 12:14 (NIV) Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?”
Luke 12:15 (NIV) Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”
Luke 12:16 (NIV) And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest.
Luke 12:17 (NIV) He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’
Luke 12:18 (NIV) “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain.
Luke 12:19 (NIV) And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.” ‘
Luke 12:20 (NIV) “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’
Luke 12:21 (NIV) “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”
In Deut a Rabi could arbitrate a dispute between people
He could be a Teacher and Attorney
Luke 12:15 (NIV) Then he said to them, “Watch out!
Warning = take heed – watch out – beware
GREED OR COVETOUSNESS
Greed you just want more
COVETOUSNESS you want someone else’s or what they specifically have
WWII was about greed Hitler wanted what others had
Lucifer wanted what God had – so passes on to us this sin
JESUS TEACHES THIS PARABLE BECAUSE OF COVETOUSNESS
THE RICH FOOL HAD OTHERS AS WELL HAVE GOD FAR FROM HIS MIND
GOD REQUIRES THE FIRST FRUITS 10%
He was absorbed in his possessions
It’s all about us!
Matthew 6:19 (KJV) Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
Matthew 6:20 (KJV) But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
Matthew 6:21 (KJV) For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
Matthew 16:26 (KJV)
For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
DID HE GET THE MESSAGE? I THINK SO – HE HAD NO MORE DIALOG
